Drug Uses
Lipitor is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) for reducing the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in your blood. Accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the walls of your arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and, as a result, decreases the oxygen supply to your heart, brain, and other parts of your body. Lowering your blood level of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina (Chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.

How Taken
Lipitor comes as a tablet to take in orally. It is generally taken once a day with or without a meal. It is advised to take Lipitor at about the same time each day. Your doctor may prescribe you a lower dose to start with and then gradually increase it. Do not stop taking Lipitor without your doctor`s approval, even if you feel well. You should have a low cholesterol and low fat diet while taking Lipitor.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage
Store this medication at room temperature 15–30°C (59–86°F). Keep away from children and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

More Information
During treatment with Lipitor, alcohol should be taken only in moderate doses. Taking alcohol and Lipitor at the same time may increase the risk of liver damage. Avoid taking grapefruit juice with Lipitor–they may interact, which may lead to potentially dangerous side effects. Discuss the use of alcohol, grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first consulting with your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions
You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment or you may not be able to take Lipitor at all if you have- liver disease, a chronic muscular disease, need major surgery, or have a blood disorder. This drug is in the FDA pregnancy category X, which means that studies in animals or human beings have demonstrated fetal abnormalities, or there is evidence of fetal risk based on human experience or both. Therefore, do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant. It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk. Do not take Lipitor if you are breast feeding, unless your doctor approves.
